Genre

This is a medium shot showing the place in which this music video is set, an empty room this could connote an abandoned building or the fact that the band are only there and that they like to be left alone. The yellow tube is used in this shot to interest the audience and make them ask questions such as why is it there etc. the following shot shows the camera zooming in on the tube and going into the tube until you reach the end where you see the lead singer lip syncing to the bands song. As the camera goes through the tube the camera twists and turns with the tube, this could suggest that the band had a long start to get to where they are now and the use of the twists and turns symbolises this. The fact that the camera is working its way to the end of the tube where you see the singer builds the audience interest and makes them want to keep watching to find out who's song it is. The white wall could suggest a clean slate or it may have just been used to make the yellow tube stand even more. This shot is not conventional as it is more abstract and is presenting art which links to their inspiration for this music video.

This shot is a medium shot showing all five band members with lights on their backs. The band members are seen running down the corridor with these lights on their back. The fact that they are carrying the lights makes them stand out, the lights could connote stardom and that they are a popular band. Each light shines on the band member behind however the main singer who is at the front doesn't stand out much as you can't see him due to no light on him. The fact that he is at the front tells the audience that he is the lead singer. In this shot the lights are the main focus this is because the background is darker and the lights grab the attention of the audience this could connote that the band is subverting the typical conventions of the rock genre as dark lighting is a convention of the rock genre.

This is a long shot showing the performance part within the music video, this adheres to the conventions of the rock genre. The bright orange background makes the band stand out, as does the lights/ stage they are standing on. This colour subverts the rock genre as the typical colour that is used within music videos of this genre is mainly black. The fact that two of the members of the band aren't wearing any shirts adheres to the rock genre as well as the fact that they have tattoos. The bands image adheres to the rock genre as they have long black hair and tattoos which is a stereotype of the rock genre, some of the band members are also wearing black leather trousers which also adheres to the stereotype of the rock genre. however the fact that they all have the same look that they don't have the same look shows a contrast between the rock genre and the funk rock genre and it also makes them different and stand out from other rock bands. This shot follows the rule of thirds showing the guitars, the background and the lead singer as the main points of interest. The background is a main point of interest because it makes the band stand out and it subverts rock stereotypes. The guitars are also a main point of interest because they adhere to the conventions of the rock genre. The main singer is a point of interest because he is seen jumping in the air and moving around on the stage, which is a common feature in rock performance music videos.

This is a long shot showing one of the band members standing in front of a wall topless. The fact that he is topless shows off his tattoos which is a stereotypical feature of the rock genre. The wall behind him is unfinished which could connote that the band still have new things to come, it could also suggest a new slate or a new album. The way he is standing could connote an army background as this is how someone in the army stands when in front of their officer. His image adheres to the rock genre as he has black hair and tattoos which is a stereotype of the rock genre, he is also wearing black leather trousers which also adheres to the stereotype of the rock genre.

This is a long shot showing the random parts within the music video. By looking at this shot it tells us that the music video would be classed as disjuncture under Andrew Goodwin's theory. The main focus of the shot is the band member but also the bins as this is not typically seen with rock music videos and this also further tells us that this video is disjuncture. The wall behind him is unfinished which could connote that the band still have new things to come, it could also suggest a new slate or a new album.

Vox pops

 Vox Pops Analysis:

The rules of the Vox Pop are; to have the person you are interviewing on the right hand side of the camera. The person answering the questions should be facing the interviewer so that their gaze is off screen. A banner with the name, age and occupation of the interviewee should appear once on the bottom of the screen. The Vox Pop should have a busy background and should also have the question which has been asked at the start of it.

Above is our Vox pops which we filmed in school, we asked ten people six different questions about music  videos. Communication with the artist

I emailed the artist whose song we wanted to use. We thought that by doing this they would email us back giving us permission to create a music video for their song. The screenshot below is of the email that we as a group sent them. In this email we should've asked if they could send us an MP3 version of their song to make it easier for us to listen to and edit with.

Genre, Audience profile and Chosen band

We chose the band 3rd Rock Revolution because we liked their song 'Put on ya boots'. The genre of this band is blues, funk and rock which is a hybrid genre. I thought that by having the mixed genre it made the track more unique which is another thing that I liked about this band and their track.  Also when we first listened to our chosen song we found that it wasn't a typical rock song which we liked, the song contains the rock style beat of the guitar and drums and a males vocals which sounded bluesy and also added to the uniqueness of the track. The bands name 3rd Rock Revolution implies that they are a rock band, however they are not a stereotypical rock band as their music doesn't sound like the typical rock song. The bands image also indicates that they subvert the rock genre as they don't have the typical rock image/ look this also made us chose this band.

Our Chosen Genre

Our chosen genre is a hybrid genre which includes the following genres; Blues, Funk and Rock. These three types of genre are completely different which therefore makes our chosen track more interesting and unique.

The conventions and features of a Rock music video are:

- Narrative vs Performance
- The main singer is always in the video
- Having a break in the music video is always a common feature
- Footage is edited to match the music
- The lighting is usually dark
- Dark clothing is usually worn
- There is usually some violence included
- The artists are seen to be aggressive when singing in the performance part of the video
- The costume used in rock music videos are iconic and follow a trend that is stylized to each particular artist, a good example of this is Kiss as they have a very recognisable image.

The conventions and features of a Funk music video are:

- Performance video
- Close ups of the artist as they are singing
- Mix of low and high lighting/ lighting effects
- The costumes used in funk music videos are not iconic compared to the costumes used in a rock music video.
- Most shots are on the artist
- A good example of an artist who has songs that are of the funk genre is prince, although he uses a combination of genres for different songs

The conventions and features of a Blues music video are:

- Performance based video
- Camera shots to show the artist(s) as well as instruments
- Costume tends to be bright colours and less iconic compared to the costumes used in rock music videos
- Mix of low and high lighting
- A good example would be The Rolling Stones - Brown sugar music video

Digipak analysis

Rihanna - Loud

Analysis:

Rihanna has different coloured hair on all her album covers, to show that it is a new album this makes her stand out as an artist. This makes her as an artist more interesting as she promotes her albums in a unique way compared to other artists. This digipak is visually interesting and makes the audience want to purchase her album because of the colours used and the images. The album cover features Rihanna as the main/ only image this makes it easy for the audience to recognise the artist and the album they wish to purchase. The typography used on the front cover is bold and simple, the name of the artist and the album are both in capital letters and are in white text. The colour white makes the text stand out which again makes it easier for the audience to find her new album. On the front of the album cover the image of Rihanna is a close up and  shows her with bright red hair, heavily made up and bright red lips to match her hair colour. She is also seen with her eyes closed and lips slightly parted this could represent the image of being innocent as her facial expression is sort of angelic. The CD disc itself is very unique as it has the image of a white/ pink rose which has the hole as the centre. A rose connotes purity and could even represent growth of how her music has developed over time. Finally the inside of the digipak has a large image of Rihanna lying in a rose bush wearing a white dress. Rihanna stands out more than the background in this image as her hair is brighter than the roses and her white dress also makes her stand out. The fact that there are roses in this image links to the image on the CD disc this shows the consistency throughout the digipak. The use of bright colours within this digipak adheres to the conventions of the pop genre.
